Evolution of the X-ray Luminosity in Young HII Galaxies

چکیده
In an effort to understand the correlation between X-ray emission and present star formation rate (SFR), we obtained XMM-Newton data to estimate the X-ray luminosities of a sample of actively starforming HII galaxies. The obtained X-ray luminosities are compared to other well known tracers of star formation activity such as the far infrared and the ultraviolet luminosities. We also compare the obtained results with empirical laws from the literature and with recently published analysis applying synthesis models. We use the time delay between the formation of the stellar cluster and that of the first X-ray binaries, in order to put limits on the age of a given stellar burst. We conclude that the generation of soft X-rays, as well as the Hα or infrared luminosities is instantaneous. The relation between the observed radio and hard X-ray luminosities, on the other hand, points to the existence of a time delay between the formation of the stellar cluster and the explosion of the first massive stars and the consequent formation of supernova remnants and high mass X-ray binaries (HMXB) which originate the radio and hard X-ray fluxes respectively. When comparing hard Xrays with a star formation indicator that traces the first million years of evolution (e.g. Hα luminosities) we found a deficit in the expected X-ray luminosity. This deficit is not found when the X-ray luminosities are compared with infrared luminosities, a star formation tracer that represents an average over the last 10 years. The results support the hypothesis that hard X-rays are originated in X-ray binaries which, as supernova remnants, have a formation time delay of a few mega years after the starforming burst.

Structure and Evolution of Hot Gas in 30 Dor
We have investigated the structure and evolution of hot gas in the 30 Dor nebula, based on recent X-ray observations. Our deep ROSAT HRI image shows that diffuse X-ray emission arises in blister-shaped regions outlined by loops of HII gas. X-ray spectroscopic data from ASCA confirm the thermal nature of the emission and indicate that hot gas temperature decreases from the core to the halo of th...
متن کاملThe X-ray view of Giga-Hertz peaked spectrum radio galaxies
Context. This paper presents the X-ray properties of a fluxand volume-limited complete sample of 16 Giga-Hertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) galaxies. Aims. This study addresses three basic questions in our understanding of the nature and evolution of GPS sources: a) What is the physical origin of the X-ray emission in GPS galaxies? b) What physical system is associated with the X-ray obscuration? c) W...
متن کاملMultiwavelength study of the nuclei of a volume-limited sample of galaxies I: X-ray observations
We discuss ROSAT HRI X-ray observations of 33 very nearby galaxies, sensitive to X-ray sources down to a luminosity of approximately 10 erg s. The galaxies are selected from a complete, volume limited sample of 46 galaxies with d < 7 Mpc for which we have extensive multi-wavelength data. For an almost complete sub-sample with MB < −14 (29/31 objects) we have HRI images. Contour maps and source ...
متن کاملLow-luminosity Agn and Normal Galaxies
Low-luminosity AGN (with LX < 1 × 10 42 ergs s) far outnumber ordinary AGN, and are therefore perhaps more relevant to our understanding of AGN phenomena and the relationship between AGN and host galaxies. Many normal galaxies harbor LINER and starburst nuclei, which, together with LLAGN, are a class of “low-activity” galaxies that have a number of surprisingly similar X-ray characteristics, de...
متن کاملThe X-ray luminosity function of galaxies and its evolution
We compile one of the largest ever samples to probe the X-ray normal galaxy luminosity function and its evolution with cosmic time. In particular, we select 207 galaxies (106 late and 101 early-type systems) from the Chandra Deep Field North and South surveys, the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and the XBOOTES survey. We derive the luminosity function separately for the total (early+late), t...
